Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AlzQuilts.org) offers an online auction during the first 10 days of every month. Each November, in honor of National Alzheimer's Awareness Month, the AAQI offers 12 very special quilts. This year the auction quilts have been made by world renowned quilters Alex Anderson, Hollis Chatelain, Caryl Bryer Fallert, John Flynn, Diane Gaudynski, Becky Goldsmith, Pat Holly, Libby Lehman, Marsha McCloskey, Sue Nickels, Mary Sorensen, and Ricky Tims.

The quilts are about 16" x 16" and the auction is open to the public.

Last year the 12 quilts offered in the November auction raised more than $14,000 for the AAQI, an all-volunteer effort to raise awareness and fund research through art.

Visit http://www.alzquilts.org/ciqa.html to preview the quilts.
On November 1st you can bid on the quilts here:

Funky Fall and Free Pattern

Diane’s Funky Fall quilt fabric collection for Clothworks is light-hearted with a folk art appeal. Black crows with bright kerchiefs and happy scarecrows are featured with apples and apple pie, stemmed cherries, acorns and of course, pumpkins. The colors in the collection are as fresh and crisp as an autumn breeze especially when paired with the black or beige background on several of the patterns.

The panel is a collage of fall images for a myriad of creative possibilities.

Gayle Noyes framed several of the motifs and alternated them with pieced apple blocks for this free downloadable pattern.

A Modern Take on Quilting

Modern Quilting – of course this is a recent trend! But what is it? Freedom and innovation are key elements of Modern Quilting and therefore a definition is something of a moving target. It might be said the modern quilters like to “think outside the box.” Having said that, modern quilts often share at least some of the following:
Simplicity, yet sophistication of design
Clean lines of squares, rectangles, and half-square triangles
Crisp, clear, bold, bright colors
Gray and whites as neutral colors
Solids combined with a touch of prints
Stylized flowers, paisley, stripes, graphic prints
Use of coordinating fabrics
Improvising with traditional techniques

While modern quilters enjoy simplicity of design, they prize proficiency. Often the simplicity affords both beginners and advanced quilters opportunities to hone quilting techniques and skills. Modern quilters prize high quality.
